Washington Redskins Into Next Round

Joe Gibbs' Washington team may be peaking at the right time. With the wyly old coach back in the playoffs for the first time in thirteen years, his outfit looked pretty good in beating the Buccaneers 17-10.

The victory was the sixth straight the team but they only managed who won despite gaining only 120 yards of offense. It was supposedly the lowest total yardage in NFL history for a winning team in a postseason game (Elias Sports Bureau).

Arrington's interception set up Clinton Portis' six-yard run to the line, and Sean Taylor returned a fumble fifty odd yards for another score as Washington took the game and made their way to the next round.

Redskins Sweep Cowboys

The Redskins completed the double over the Cowboys on Sunday with Mark Brunell passing for four touchdowns as they crushed the Cowboys 35-7.

It was the biggest margin of victory for Washington against their rivals and it was the first time that they had swept Dallas since 1995.

The Cowboys had dominated the rivalry going back a long way, winning 14 of 15 meetings before the Redskins rallied for a memorable 14-13 victory against Dallas in September. Brunell hit with scoring passes of 39 and 70 yards in the last four minutes of the game.

This time around, the Redskins clearly proved they were the better team, dominating both sides of the line of scrimmage. Drew Bledsoe was sacked seven times and committed four turnovers. In contrast Brunell was not sacked once.

Washington are now in a second-place tie with Dallas, two games behind the New York Giants. The Redskins host the Giants next week and still alive in the division race as well as a wild-card place.

Ryan "The Hammer" Clark

Safety Ryan Clark is a 'big' hitter at under 6 feet and just 200 pounds. Quarterback Moss was who is just 5-feet-10 and 190 pounds, was a little skeptical on hearing about this. "I kind of looked at Ryan and I was like, 'Are you sure?'" Moss said. "Then in our scrimmage against the Ravens, I saw him fly around and throw his body ... It was very impressive." Clark has 25 tackles and is fifth on the team.

"I've never been scared to hit," Clark admitted. "I go up and try to hit. Sometimes I win. Sometimes I lose. Lately, I've been winning more than losing. I had a good friend tell me that you're either going to be the hammer or the nail."

Brian Westbrook experienced Clarks ferocity last Sunday when Clark put the running back on his behind for just a one yard gain. "Ryan thinks he's a linebacker," Marcus Washington (linebacker) said.

Clark remembers being told by New York defensive coordinator Tim Lewis "they think you can't tackle" before the Giants cut him in the winter of 2004. It was all the motivation Clark needed - making fourteen tackles and an interception two weeks ago against the New York Giants.

"Ryan plays with a chip on his shoulder," Safeties coach Jackson said. That's a problem for opposing ball runners.

Crushed Redskins Need Leadership

After the Meadowlands Massacre, as some have dubbed the 36-0 beating at the hands of the New York Giants, the Redskins need to bounce back.

Joe Gibbs looks to Mark Brunell to lead the team as they prepare for Sunday's visit by Philadelphia. A win and the Redskins are back in the division race. A loss and they're in the cellar heading to Tampa Bay.

"Mark's a born leader," Gibbs said. "He has a lot of confidence. He has been there, done that. He's been in really tough situations. All of those reasons instill confidence in those around him."

Santana Looking Forward To New York

Santana Moss is on the up as he prepares to return to the stadium where he used to play with New York Jets. Moss is doing well for the Washington Redskins. He's the Man in an offense that has leapt from the NFL's third-worst in 2004 to second-best now.

"Santana has been phenomenal," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said. "I'm really thankful we got him. Last year, I was so frustrated....we couldn't get big plays. For us to get some this year changes the whole complexion of what we're doing."

To put it in perspective - Moss' ten catches of at least thirty yards or more is one more than the Redskins managed all last season.

"It's pretty cool to go back and be playing in the game we're playing in on Sunday," said Moss, "I know the stadium well. I know it has some pretty fast turf. I'm hoping it's a good day so we can be able to do the things that we do."
