Betting odds are a very important part of sports betting. That may sound like an obvious
statement but essentially the odds are just a 'price', really no different to a price
associated with other goods or services. If you can attain better odds or prices then
your returns are greater and your cost is less.
E.g. In an contest, say an NFL match up between New England and Pittsburg - New England's odds of winning are around
-120 (5/6), Pittsburgh's maybe +100 (1/1). Leaving aside the draw or 'push' for a moment - if you bet
$100.00 on New England and they win this would result in a return of $83.33 ($183.33 total return). Bet $100.00 on
Pittsburgh and your profit from victory would be $100.00 ($200.00 total return). Naturally the odds
normally reflect a team's chances of victory.
When the odds are 'shorter' in the betting your returns will be less, so $100 at -150 would only return $66.66 ($166.66 total return)
Conversely if the odds are better for instance +130 your $100 bet could bring you $130 ($230 total return). This is why getting
consistently competitive prices is important and it is why Betfile Sports is a very popular choice with bettors. We
consistently
offer some of the best odds in the industry.
The major sports betting odds in the US, NFL odds, NBA odds, MLB odds and NHL odds take the same format and are essentially the chances given of a team, individual, horse or animal winning an event, expressed in numeric form.
Odds may be assigned to different markets like futures, totals or sides (point spread) but the principles are the same.
The odds take many forms. In the UK they are expressed as a fraction e.g.
2/1, in Europe they are usually expressed as decimals e.g. 3.0, and in the USA they are
expressed as a line numbers number e.g. +200.
With the US style, in the above example, the bookmaker is essentially stating that you
will need to bet $100 in order to obtain a profit of $200.
With an odds on selection the odds would look like this. 1/2 UK style - which would be expressed as 1.5 European
style and -200 US style. The US style is a little more confusing here because of the negative number. But all the sportsbook is stating is that you will
need to bet $200 to obtain a profit of $100.
