Pittsburgh Steelers Nail Down Broncos

Ben Roethlisberger was responsible for four scoring drives in the first half and built a big lead on the way to a relatively easy 34-17 victory over the Denver Broncos. They now head to Super Bowl XL in Detroit against the Seattle Seahawks after their win over Carolina.

Dan Marino was the youngest quarterback ever to play in a Super Bowl at twenty-three years and four months for the Miami Dolphins, back in Super Bowl XIX. Ben Roethlisberger will become the second youngest quarterback to play in a Super Bowl at a shade under twenty-four years of age.

Pittsburgh had committed a total of twelve turnovers in their last three AFC title game losses but on this occasion the Steelers forced four turnovers - all of them by Jake Plummer, who was intercepted twice and fumbled twice.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are just the second team in NFL history to win three games on the road on the way to the Super Bowl, the first being the 1985 Patriots.

Roethlisberger made thirteen of seventeen passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and built a 24-3 lead. With 3.00m left in the fourth quarter he sealed it with a four yard TD.

Jerome Bettis scored on a three-yard run and was pulled back for another by a penalty flag. Jeff Reed kicked goals of 47 and 42 yards for the Steelers.

Plummer could only muster five of ten pass attempts for seventy odd yards with an interception and fumble in the first half and it set the tone for the Broncos for the rest of the game. He did connect with Ashley Lelie on a nice thirty yarder for a touchdown in the second half, but also had two more turnovers in the second half.

Pittsburgh pressure was relentless and they ran out deserved winners. They are currently -4 for the Super Bowl game on our football spreads.

Pittsburgh Steelers Upset Colts

It was one of the most enthralling playoff games in a long while. The Steelers played a good game and deserved their win - but so nearly had it stolen from them by goal line fumble and an unexpected refereeing decision.

The Steelers were quite dominant until the fourth quarter, when Vanderjagt missed his first field goal at home, from 46 yards. It ultimately cost the Colts the game 21-18.

Where Pittsburgh's powerful defense put off a jittery Peyton Manning, taking the ball on downs at the Colts two yard line with just more than a minute left, Bettis then made a mistake when he fumbled after a hit. Nick Harper, snatched up the ball and made for the end zone. But the saving tackle came from an unlikely source as Roethlisberger reached out a hand and stopped the run

Manning then passed the Colts into field goal range, where Vanderjagt missed.

The refereeing call that confused everyone was when Troy Polamalu's diving interception was overruled - when replays clearly showed Polamalu catching the ball as he fell, rolling and tumbling with it in his hands, and fumbling it as he got up.

The Colts were matched by the Steelers who used Parker and Bettis to great effect - and despite some great throwing by Manning late in the day, it was a well masterminded victory by Pittsburgh's management and team.

Bus Brings Home Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers were low on confidence before their game against the Bears.
They'd started this season as Super Bowl contenders but are now fighting to keep playoff hopes alive having dropped three consecutive games - the first time this has happened since 2003.

Pittsburgh overcame their state of mind and broke out with a brave running display with Jerome Bettis at the centre of everything. The Steelers finally tasted victory -21-9.

Bettis ground out over a hundred yards in terrible conditions to help his team to reach 190 rushing yards. In that display he added to scoring plays. "I made a living on carrying people." said Bettis. At 5 foot 11 inches and 255 pounds the tag might actually have been issues due to his build - still, noone will care after the victory.

In winning, the Steelers delayed the Bengals winning of the AFC North. Pittsburgh also benefited from San Diego and Kansas City losses - leaving the three teams at 8-5.

Chicago are now 9-4 - still a game ahead of the Vikings in the NFC North.

Steelers Add To Packers' Troubles

Even without Ben Roethlisberger at the helm, the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to find a way to win on the road at the Green Bay Packers. Using strong defence and the running of Duce Staley, the Steelers extended their road winning streak to eleven games with a 20-10 victory.

Roethlisberger missed his second game after knee surgery on Thursday.

This time, the Steelers used Charlie Batch as replacement, who was making his first start since 2001 (while still with Detroit). Batch completed 9-of-16 passes for just 65 yards with an interception - but it was a deliberately conservative game plan.

Staley rushed for 68 of his 76 yards in the second half and received most of his fifteen carries only after Willie Parker left the game with an ankle injury. Staley didn't get a carry in his other game this season.

The poor season continued for the Packers (1-7). Facing an array of blitzes, Green Bay's Brett Favre completed 20-of-35 passes for 214 yards and an interception. Favre also fumbled in the second quarter. Steelers' Troy Polamalu picked up the loose ball and raced 77 yards for a touchdown.

Roethlisberger Could Play Sunday

"Big" Ben Roethlisberger's knee injury isn't as serious as it was first feared, but Steelers coach Bill Cowher isn't ready to say if his QB will be ready to play on Sunday in Green Bay.

Roethlisberger had an MRI exam on Tuesday, a day after the Steelers' 20-19 victory over Baltimore, and he was told he had a strained posterior capsule. The injury inhibits the range knee motion and can be painful.

"All ligaments are fine, and we'll get a further update as the week goes on," Cowher said. "Hopefully it's something he can continue to work through, and we'll rest him when we can and see where he is at the end of the week."

It's Miller Time

In an obvious passing situation, the Steelers' huddle is alive with chit-chat. Wide receivers want the ball, each insisting he will be the man for the job. Heath Miller says nothing even though he is second on the team with 19 receptions and third with 200 receiving yards.

The reason? First off he's a rookie, and many think rookies are supposed to be seen and not heard. But he doesn't have to say anything.

"I never hear Heath," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "I just know he's going to get open."

The confidence and ability of this first-year tight end is showing itself more and more in games. Roethlisberger found him for both Steelers' touchdowns in a 20-19 victory against the Ravens on Monday night.

That puts Miller as the team-leading receiver with six scoring receptions this season, one more than Hines Ward. He has made the end zone at least once in each of his last four games.

Pittsburgh Find Solace On The Road

Heinz Field was once a haven for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they were 27-8-1 there before they lost the AFC championship game to the Patriots Jan. 23. This season it has become a place where they have become vulnerable.

They have now lost three of their last four home games - but have also set a franchise record in winning there 10th straight road game.

"For us, it's just matter of us trying to put back-to-back wins together, trying to win at home again," said receiver Hines Ward. "We want to feel comfortable as far as winning at home. For whatever reason we didn't play particularly well at home the last couple of games. We want to get things turned around and put on a streak of wins."

The Steelers were unbeaten in the regular season at Heinz Field last year, beat the Jets there in overtime in the playoffs, but lost to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. It's the second time they lost a title game to New England at Heinz Field.
