Giants Rule The Skies

Kicker Jay Feely kicked a 36-yard goal with just under four minutes remaining in overtime as the New York Giants escaped with a 26-23 victory over the Eagles.

This after Osi Umenyiora made the big play to set up Feely when stole the ball from Mike McMahon for Kendrick Allen to recover at the 27-yard line. After three runs gained nine yards, the Giants turned to Feely.

The Giants won and are now 9-4, ahead of Dallas 8-5 for first place in the NFC East.

Feely, in total contrast to the previous game where he had missed field goals, was perfect on the day, converting from 24, 21 and 27 yards.

Manning was intercepted twice in the final 3:28 of regulation and again on the Giants' first possession during overtime by Brian Dawkins on a fourth-and-three play from the Philadelphia 35-yard line. But the New York defence held. Michael Strahan made two sacks for the Giants, who finished with six in total.

The good news for the Eagles was that rookie Ryan Moats, in his debut game, rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, but that was outweighed by the fact that Philadelphia are now officially eliminated from the play-offs after the loss.

Three Strikes And Out

The game can be a cruel one and so it was for the New York Giants on Sunday. On three occasions, once during the last play of the fourth quarter and twice during over time — Jay Feely (kicker) missed field goals that would have won the game and knocked the Seahawks from their position as NFC front-runners.

After Feely's final miss, the Seahawks had their biggest play of the afternoon, a 38 yard pass from Hasselbeck to Hackett. Brown capped it by kicking a 36 yard field goal on his only attempt of the afternoon to win the game.

Their glee in surviving this struggle was matched by the gloomy intensity of New York, now 7-4, who have lost three games on late or overtime field goals.

"We played those guys as tough as anybody at their place," Antonio Pierce of NYG said. "We put ourselves in a position to win, and we didn't finish."

Feely apparently willingly took the blame, apologizing in the locker room to his teammates - stating that he was sorry and that he'd let down the team.

New York drew level, 21-21, with two minutes left in regular time, with Eli Manning's 18-yard pass to Amani Toomer and Manning's throw to Jeremy Shockey for the two-point conversion. The Giants defense then forced a punt and took over at the fifty yard line with 1:23 left. It looked like the ideal foundation for the Giants to win the game. They punched the ball down to the 22 and called their last time-out with four seconds left. Feely kicked and missed narrowly, no more than twelve inches,
and the Giants finally succumbed to a Seahawks field goal to lose the game 24-21.

Jacobs The Man as NYG Down SF

Eli Manning threw for 251 yards and Brandon Jacobs ran for a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the New York Giants defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 24 points to 6.

Despite stuttering on offense for most of the game, New York (6-2) won their third straight and remain in first place in the NFC East. It was the first visit to SF for the Giants since they infamously blew a 24 point lead in a 39-38 loss in an NFC wild card game three years ago.

New York were a little inconsistent at times in this game, committing six penalties in the first 7.5 minutes of the third quarter. San Francisco took advantage of the numerous mistakes, as Joe Nedney converted field goals of 48 and 52 yards to pull the 49ers to within 4 points with the score at 10-6.

Manning spared Giants blushes when it looked like SF were getting on top. On the last play of the third quarter, Manning launched a deep pass down the right sideline to Plaxico Burress, who made a spectacular one-handed grab for a 50-yard reception before going down at the San Francisco 49ers fifteen yard line. Jacobs reached the end zone a few plays later and the Giants grabbed the advantage.

Manning then sealed victory with another pass to Jacobs who scored easily on the next play to cement the victory.

Burress finished with 79 yards, Shockey with 77 yards and Tiki Barber gained 103 yards of total offence for the Giants. In contrast, injury ravaged San Francisco 49ers managed just 138 yards of offence and gave away twelve penalties.

Pray Game Day

Muslim football fans claim they were 'profiled' and unfairly treated by stadium security personnel - as well as the FBI - at Giants Stadium in September. They were seen praying during the game, raising the suspicions of other fans.

Five fans attending the New York Giants game against the New Orleans Saints at Meadowlands on Sept. 19 were questioned by security personnel after other fans saw them on the ground conducting their daily Muslim prayers, which are carried out five times each day. The men had found an open space and began to pray during the first quarter.

"These folks were exercising their fundamental right to practice their faith, and they wanted to enjoy, as Americans, their favorite sport." said Sohail Mohammed, a lawyer.

The men were later told they could return to watch the game, but were asked to sit in different seats. They left instead - unhappy about the experience.

Mara Inspires Giants Victory

Tiki Barber had one of the best running performances of his career, then made one the appropriate gestures of the day. After scoring late in the third quarter of the Giants' 36-0 rout of the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Barber ran straight to the Giants sideline and presented the ball to Tim McDonnell, grandson of owner Wellington Mara, who died of cancer on Tuesday at age 89.

"This is for you, this is for your grandfather," I told him.

The Giants produced their best defensive game of the season, forcing four turnovers and sacking Washington's Mark Brunell and Patrick Ramsey five times. The win was New York's first shutout in seven years and put the Giants atop the NFC East at 5-2.

Barber ran for 206 yards on 24 carries, and his four yard touchdown run helped him surpass his previous game high of 203 yards, set against the Eagles in 2002.
