New England Patriots Blast By Jacksonville Jaguars

The Patriots made history last night in brushing aside the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-3 by becoming the first team to win ten consecutive playoff games. It's one more win than the Packers managed under the legendary Vince Lombardi in the 1960's. Ironically, the last post-season game that the Patriots lost was in January 1999...to Jacksonville.

Tom Brady, who has been involved in every victory during New England's streak, completed fifteen passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns - with no turnovers.

He connected with Troy Brown from eleven yards out to begin the scoring in the second quarter and led 7-3 at halftime. He threw three yards to Givens in the third and then found Watson for a 63-yard catch and run that build the lead to 21-3.

New England will either travel to play the Broncos or the Colts, depending on the outcome of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals game.

The worry for the Patriots is that they have already lost pretty convincingly to both Indianapolis and the Broncos - the upside is that New England now look like a completely different team.

A Little Better For Patriots

The New York Jets lost again on Sunday - largely due to the return of Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk - who came back from injuries. Adam Vinatieri, who hasn't missed a game in ten seasons with the Patriots set a mew team record for career points. But more importantly perhaps, was that New England had its best defensive game of the season.

"The team just feels a little more comfortable," said David Givens, "You have a lot of your weapons back, guys that have made big plays."

The Jets now 2-10, also suffering from lost player due to injury, have scored just one touchdown in four games - and it wasn't in this game. They gained just 164 yards, the fourth time this season they have been below 200.

"Having our defense on the field too long and us not scoring is a bad combination," Herman Edwards said for the Jets.

Dillon's touchdown run made it 13-3 late in the third quarter and Faulk made three big third-down catches as the Patriots 7-5 maintained their two-game lead in the AFC East over Miami. The teams meet on Jan 1 in Foxborough.

Faulk said he and Dillon, sidelined two games with a calf injury, talked about their return. How they wanted to make a point, to get things going again.

Vinatieri kicked field goals of 21, 34 and 22 yards, giving him 1,134 total points.

Patriots Look For Answers

The Patriots still don't have any answers for their leaky defense - injury has destroyed their chances this season most likely. Duane Starks was benched for the second half of Monday night's 40-21 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Starks was matched up against Reggie Wayne for the first half, and after watching Wayne catch six passes for 65 yards and a touchdown, the Patriots' coaching staff pulled him out. It is probably unfair to blame Starks - but you feel that is what Patriots management might have been putting across.

Starks has been in terrible from though and his sidelining seemed the only course of action.

Asked if it hurt to be on the bench, Starks replied, "Of course. I'm a competitive person. I like to go out and compete. I like to be put in the right situation where I can go out and do some things. It just hasn't happened."

Indy's Marvin Harrison twice got behind cornerback Asante Samuel for long gains and also out-jumped him for a 1-yard touchdown. The New England Patriots, playing without lineman Richard Seymour for the fourth straight game, also failed to muster a pass rush against Manning.

"Basically, it seems like there's a problem that needs to be fixed," Starks said. "And it don't lie with one person, you know? It's just collectively as a group we need to come together."

Belichick admitted that his team had been totally outplayed.

A Question Of Desire

So who needs this game the most - New England or Indianapolis? You'd have to say that New England Patriots need it more because they have already lost three games. The Colts, well, they want to get that Gillette Stadium monkey off their backs and prove to everyone that they can get past a Patriots team that has manipulated them in recent seasons.

This is big for both teams, but on the face of it, at 7-0, you might give this one to the Colts - but then this guy called Tedy Bruschi returned last Sunday - a born leader, big play master - and the whole thing is up in the air again.

Bruschi Back

Tedy Bruschi has been an integral cog in the Patriots' defence. His reptutation has come from his ability to make crucial plays a the right moment.

Bruschi wants to meet his goal of being back on the field on Sunday night against the Bills.

Eight months ago the nine-year veteran went from reading Peyton Manning's pass plays to losing vision in his left eye from a stroke. A blood clot slipped through a tiny hole in his heart, found its way to the 32-year-old's brain and left the father of three barely able to walk.

Despite recovering quickly, Bruschi said that a comeback would have to wait until 2006. Last week, however, he announced that he had medical clearance to play and his decision to return.

"Unanimously, every doctor and physician that's seen me has given me clearance," he said. "This isn't something you just go for. I mean, come on, I lost my sight. ... It was a traumatic experience. It's been a long road back. I'm not going to jump into something without being absolutely 100% positive, and I am."

Larry B. Goldstein, director of the Duke Stroke Center said:

"The most rapid recovery period is over the first few weeks, and it continues rapidly for two to three months....getting immediate treatment, preferably within three hours of the stroke, can significantly reduce the chance of being disabled. ... we say time lost is brain lost."

Bruschi was at home when he had his stroke and his father-in-law, who is a physician's assistant, quickly called the medics.
