Steelers Ineffective Against Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars won 9-0 for a memorable if low scoring victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. John Henderson and linebacker Mike Peterson 'filled' the middle to prevent any through traffic and Rashean Mathis made a couple of interceptions.

It's the first time the Steelers have been shut out since 2003. It is also the first time that Roethlisberger has failed to score.

Just 15 days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy, Roethlisberger - who became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl last February - threw for just 141 yards and was intercepted twice.

In their last game the Jaguars took down the Dallas Cowboys.

In this latest game against the Steelers the Jaguars put up a 'steel curtain' (a term reserved for the Steeler's teams of the '70's) of their own to come through with a big defensive display.

Jacksonville held Pittsburgh to 153 total yards - just 26 on the ground, with Willie Parker being held to only 20 yards on eleven carries.

Josh Scobee made all the Jags' points with three second-half field goals.

Other Stats:

Byron Leftwich completed 26 of 39 passes for 260 yards for the Jaguars - with one interception.

Fred Taylor rushed for 92 yards on 22 runs.

Taylor Out Sunday For Jags

Jacksonville Jaguars' Fred Taylor will not be ready for Sunday's game against Cleveland Browns, it means that he misses his third game in the past four weeks.
Taylor suffered an ankle injury on Nov. 6 against Houston. Since then, he has played just once, against the Titans. He had six carries for minus-8 yards in that game, sitting out most of the second half with a thigh bruise.

Taylor said: "We're trying to do what's best for the team, to get me as close to 100% as possible for our stretch run."

Right now that means sitting out.

He was not fully recovered for the Tennessee game, he admitted. "Looking back at Tennessee, it wasn't the smartest thing to do, whenever I'm healthy enough to go, I'll be out there. The ankle is still sore, but it's a lot better than it was."

Greg Jones will start in place of Taylor. Jones has led the Jaguars in rushing in each of the three games that Taylor has missed this year.

Jaguars Look To The Road

The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to become the first team to win three con-secutive road games since they did it in 2001. They play against the Arizona Cardinals this week and the Cleveland Browns next week before coming home.

But the Jaguars may not have to be too concerned about todays road game - as the Cardinals may not have much of a home field edge in their final year at Sun Devil Stadium. The team is currently 3-7 and sold only 44,000 tickets for their previous home game on Nov. 6 - a loss to Seattle Seahaks - and not all of those fans even bothered to show. Also factor in that there is no rivalry between these teams as this is only the second time overall and the first time in five years that they've met.

Jack Del Rio (coach) said the Jaguars can't be concerned about the atmosphere or lack thereof - that they have to prepare to play their best football.

With Arizona ranked 26th in defensive yards given up, the Jaguars offense, which has scored thirty points two weeks in a row after going fifty-eight games in a row without making those numbers, could have another big day.

Quarterback Byron Leftwich seems to elevating his game in his third season and the coach is impressed with the poise that Leftwich is showing.

"I think it can be underestimated how important it is for a guy to remain calm and pick out receivers and keep his eyes on the receivers down the field and not get flustered, not get rattled and not start turning the ball over and not start looking for the rush instead of looking down the field," he said.

Leftwich Faces Alternate Team

Byron Leftwich would have been starting for the Baltimore Ravens against the Jaguars on Sunday - had the trade not fallen through on draft day in 2003. But Leftwich will start for the Jaguars in an important game for them. The Ravens are most likely out of it this season but could be motivated by the Leftwich issue - depending on how sore they are about it.

The Ravens tried to make a trade with Minnesota to move ahead of the Ravens to select Leftwich. It didn't work out, allegedly because they missed the deadline because they couldn't get through on the phone to complete the deal.

Leftwich should have the upper hand in this game against the Ravens' Kyle Boller.

This is 15th meeting between the teams and the the Jaguars lead the series 8-6, but have lost the last six meetings, including a 24-17 setback in 2003 - their last meeting.

The Jaguars won the first eight meetings, beating the Ravens twice a season from 1996-1999 and also made the playoffs in each of those four years.

In 2000 it was Baltimore's turn - they swept the Jaguars and then won the Super Bowl.

Unpredictable Jaguars

The Jaguars, like their counterparts in the wild, can be unpredictable. Jacksonville tend to play better as an underdog than as a favored team. They win against teams they're not supposed to win against and get turned over by teams they're supposed to beat.

Last year they became one of the few Florida teams to beat the Green Bay Packers in December. They then came home and lost to Houston Texans, for the second time, and cost themselves a playoff berth.

This year they lost to a Rams team that was missing six starters, including four Pro Bowlers. Yet they won at Pittsburgh.

So what of the Jacksonville Jaguars' game on Sunday against Houston. We're giving Houston (1-6) +13 points at time of writing. The biggest positive spread on the board.

You just need to work what the Jaguar's frame of mind will be come game time...

Del Rio Spells It Out

Coach Del Rio insists his players have received his message loud and clear. Del Rio's stated that they can't take the St. Louis Rams for granted even though they have an interim head coach in Joe Vitt - Mike Martz has been sidelined for the season with a heart condition.

The Rams also are likely to be missing Marc Bulger and their top two receivers, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

The Rams are also 3-4 and are allowing an average 30 points a game. But the Rams offense is ranked fifth in yardage gained and will test a Jaguar defense that is ranked fifth in yardage allowed.

"They're having to listen to all the other rhetoric - how the Jaguars should win - but I promise you they're getting the message - not to be complacent. We understand we need to keep improving as a football team. We need to be better as the year goes on and we're going to need to play good football in the next few weeks and this week in particular."
