Respect Elusive For Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are only one of two remaining teams in the NFL that are still undefeated but they don't get much respect in some areas of the game

Standing at 5-0 (the second time this has happened in three seasons) the Indianapolis Colts head into their bye week with a two game advantage in the AFC South.

The problem is that with the Colts you get this feeling of invevitability - that whether they stand at 5-0 or 13-0 - they just ain't good enough to win the Super Bowl. Unfair but true nevertheless.

The Colts of course set themselves highs standards and are judged by those same standards. But coach and owner agree that all you can do is win.

Meanwhile the Colts own the NFL's best regular-season record since 1999: 82-35.

The Colts are the only NFL team to earn six playoff appearances in the last seven seasons.

It remains to be seen if they live up to expectations this season and go all the way.

Unlucky 13?

It is now the turn of the Jaguars, to see if they can upset the seemingly invincible Indianapolis Colts and their quest for the perfect season. The Colts are currently 12-0.

The Colts are already assured of participating in the post season, also want the win to ensure they win the AFC South title and get home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Jacksonville have come close to beating the Colts - they fought out a testing 10-3 encounter at the RCA Dome in the second game of the season. At that time the Colts were winning games with a smothering defence with the offence finding its stride.
The points started to come from week four onwards and the lowest they have totalled in a game since then is 26.

So the Jaguars need stay in touch with a side that is scoring easily. Their problem is that QB Byron Leftwich is out. David Garrard will take his place and is a worthy replacement - but he is not first choice for a reason. He does offer an added dimension in that his running game is better than that of Leftwich - who is pure pocket passer. The big issue will be in real game time - which amounts to a total of two games worth of quarters during the course of the season.

Colts Move Closer To Perfection

The Indianapolis Colts' took another step towards a perfect season with a good win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Peyton Manning, quarterback, passed for 245 yards and two touchdowns and James rushed for 124 yards to give the Colts a deserved win, 26-7.

Indianapolis became only the eleventh club to start a season 11-0 since the NFL began in 1920. The last team to beat them on winning starts, was the Denver Broncos in the 1998 season, who won their first thirteen games before losing. Only one team has had a perfect season in NFL history, the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who won all their regular season games and all three post-season games.

Colts Charge Past Patriots

The Indianapolis Colts finally left Gilette Stadium with their heads held high - and still unbeaten. Peyton Manning who had faltered badly in losing all seven of his last road games against the New England Patriots, finally began to fire with 321 passing yards and three touchdowns, as the Colts won the game 40-21 on Monday night.

The Colts became the sixth team since 1990 to start a season 8-0 and the first since the Kansas City Chiefs opened 9-0 two seasons ago. The Chiefs finished with an impressive 13-3 record but were eliminated from the play-offs in the first round.

Manning was successful with 28 of 37 throws, including a 1-yard toss to Marvin Harrison on the game's first possession and a 10-yard strike to Reggie Wayne in the second quarter, that gave the Colts a commanding 21-7 lead at half-time. He added a 30-yarder to Harrison with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter.

"We were really set on coming out here and getting a lead on these guys," Manning said. "We haven't had a lead on these guys in quite some time. The play (at the end) to Marvin was huge. And the play to Reggie before the half was really big, to get the touchdown and have momentum going into halftime."

The Colts finished with 453 total yards against the injury-hit Patriots (4-4), which had handed them six consecutive defeats and knocked them out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. This was the Colts' first victory in the series since 2000.

"It's good to come up here and get a win," said Tony Dungy. "We've got five wins on the road, and that's a good deal. But it means no more than that."

Manning set the tone on the second play from scrimmage. He found Harrison for a 48-yard connection. That duo soon combined on a 1-yard fade pass, with Harrison leaping over Asante Samuel to make the catch in the end zone.

Tom Brady ending with 22-for-33, 265 yards and three touchdowns, responded with a 16-yard score to Deion Branch, but the Colts hit back with a 17-play, 69-yard drive ending with a 2 yard touchdown for James'.

"They completely outplayed us tonight," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "They made more plays than we did."

Manning was successful and brilliant, but no doubt aided by a Patriots defence obliterated through injury. The Colts are still the NFL's only undefeated team.

Colts Chance To Dispel Demons

The Colts will be confident going into the big regular season game on Monday night against the Patriots - who wouldn't be at 7-0 for the season? Beating New England would be big for Indianapolis - it would lay some demons to rest and perhaps propel them to a Super Bowl appearance.

The Colts want to lock up home-field advantage in the playoffs with a first-round bye. They can go some way to achieving this on Monday night.

Of course the bye could prove to be an "issue" - in their past nine games after a bye, the Indianapolis Colts are only 3-6. They come into the Patriots game after a bye week too.

One has to assume that the Colts have learned their lesson - that over time this stat will even out. Everyone has to deal with a bye and generally welcome them.

The Colts must be favorites on current form - but Gillette Stadium has not been a joyful experience for them in recent visits - and the Patriots will be up for this one.

Rest The Key To Colts v Patriots

Tony Dungy knows that everybody wants to discuss next week's game at New England.
But when it comes to his team, thoughts of New England will be put on hold at least for a few more days.

Dungy wants the team to concentrate on getting some rest and sorting out injuries. He will also take a long look at some of the team's backup players.

"Our goal is to rest some people and to get some other guys, who don't normally work with the first group, to get them some work. A lot of times, those are guys that really will play bigger roles in the second half of the year," said the Colts coach.

The coaching staff is also spending the bye week trying to correct any trouble spots that may have cropped up so far this season. Bearing in mind that they are 7-0 they may not be that many.

"If we get as good as we can be and as efficient at what we do in practice each week, the games will take care of themselves," Dungy said. "Our preparation for New England will start next Wednesday....I've learned that you can't over-prepare for a team."

The Colts have not won in Foxboro since 1995 and have had their last two playoff appearances end at Gillette Stadium. The "Razor" holds painful memories for them.
