Leaving Lambeau

Sunday's game could have been the last of Brett Favre's career and he will have been pleased to go out on a win. For the moment, however, the iconic quarterback plans to go home and think about his future.

Favre threw a touchdown in this game, finally, but he also showed that there were reasons why he might consider retiring as he threw a another interception (twenty- nine this season and a personal worst record) and picked up a shoulder injury.

Seahawks' Shaun Alexander set an NFL record for touchdowns in a season with twenty- eight beating NYG's Tiki Barber for the NFL rushing crown.

Favre decided not to speak to the media after the game - but just waved to the crowd - perhaps taking it all in for a final time.

One person who will definately be leaving the Packers is coach Mike Sherman who was fired today after Green Bay's worst season in fifteen years. Yet the team backed Sherman saying that he was the consummate professional, a hard worker and they expressed surprise at his firing - as did Sherman himself.

Green Bay Hopes With Favre

The Chicago Bears defense is pretty good, one of the best in the NFL. But there is only so much the Packers can get from watching film. They need to experience it first hand on Sunday in Chicago.

What is pretty clear is that running the football may not going to be effective for them against the Bears' absorbant defence. Chicago soak it up.

"I'm going out on a limb and say if we can't run the football, said Tauscher for Green Bay, "it's going to be tough. We're going to need to be able to do that in order to move the ball."

The Packers haven't done much of late. They have a grand total of 31 points in losing back-to-back games to the Vikings and the Eagles - with just three of those points coming in the second half.

Now they get to take on the Bears' top-rated defense, which has permitted only one touchdown in its last three games and only four during their seven-game winning streak.

Brett Favre, who's had Chicago's number with a 21-5 record and amassed over 6000 passing yards including 51 touchdowns, painted a bleak picture.

"I'd like to think we can go in and be able to score two or three touchdowns, if that happens, great. But, realistically, it may be ten points that we score."

It may all hinge on Brette Favre, as so often it does. He has been his own worst enemy, sometimes making insane passes into double and triple coverage, as he did last Sunday in a 19-14 loss at Philadelphia.

Favre counted two interceptions, hiking his league-leading total to nineteen. That matches his touchdown count.

On the betting front - Green Bay are getting 7 points.

Packers Fans Still Smiling

Green Bay's beloved Packers are 1-7, they are the basement team along with Houston and on track for their first losing season since 1991. But Packers fans have stood by their team through good times and bad times. Perhaps like no other franchise in the NFL - the team is an extension of the community and the people.

Most fans ache with broken hearts instead of dismissing the Packers out of disgust.

Patrick Christie, 29, of Green Bay, summed it up: I really do think of it with the spirit of family, and it's got to be tough on them when they're not winning. I mean, I feel for them, and even if we win just a couple more times, that'll at least make them feel good, and that makes me feel good."

There was some booing in the Pittsburgh loss but they are few and far between and soon fizzle out. If you are a Packers fan you stick with your team. The fans still wear happy faces.

Some have said that because Green Bay is a tiny town with a small population, they are big on pride. Lee Remmel, historian, says: "it's a matter of pride for a city of Green Bay's size to even be in the National Football League."

Let's not forget that despite their size they have had some great moments through the years. They will no doubt come again....in time.

Favre Takes It On Chin

Quarterback Brett Favre felt bad about the his five-interception performance on Sunday's - in a 21-14 loss at Cincinnati, but one should remember that he has putin some good work too over the last fourteen years or so.

"Unfortunately, I didn't make enough plays," Favre said of his second worst game ever in the regular season. "But, until they tell me differently as far as lining up and playing next week, I'm going to do the same thing.."

All five of Favre's bad throws on Sunday happened in quick succession, spanning eleven pass plays from late in the second quarter to early in the fourth quarter. With the exception of two passes that were tipped before being intercepted, Favre had no one to blame but himself for being picked off.

Deep passes under-thrown, while another potential big one down the sideline was thrown behind to the inside.

Fortunately for Green Bay, the Bengals made it count for points only once. It was Carson Palmer's third touchdown pass that gave them a needed cushion at 21-7 two minutes into the final quarter.

The thought is that Favre over did things because of the fact that the Packers came into the game without three of their top four receivers, their top two running backs and their No. 2 tight end.

If the Packers had had the cushion it is unlikely that the miscues would have been thrown. So this is to do with Favre chasing the game, as opposed to being past it.

Brett Favre - One To A Dozen

Brett Favre's consecutive-starts streak becomes the story in the market where the Packers play, especially infrequently. Green Bay Packers will visit Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon. It will be NFL stadium number 40 in which Favre has played.

The Packers and the Bengals have not played each other in more than seven years. The Packers last played the Bengals at Cinergy Field, in Sept 1998. The Packers won that one with Favre passing for one touchdown and 274 yards.

Favre and his "starts streak" have propelled the quarterback to iconic status and the Packers' stability at quarterback is historically a bit reason for their success. Cincinnati's weakness at quarterback is a major reason the team has gone fourteen seasons in a row without reaching the playoffs.

To bring it home, no fewer than twelve quarterbacks have started for the Bengals in the time Favre has been Green Bay's only starter!
