Broncos Lie In Wait For Steelers

Pittsburgh (+3) at Denver:

Both teams have a lot of running backs at their disposal, both have decent quarterbacks, they have safeties who can knock you down. Denver are 9-0 at home while Pittsburgh are 8-2 on the road - including the classic encounter at Indianapolis. So it's anyone's game.

Cowher, Steelers coach, is probably the man of the moment after defeating the Colts. He has the plan and his players execute it. What more do you need. On paper it looks like the Broncos offense vs. the Steelers defense - whoever wins that battle will most likey come away with the victory. Yet it could also come down to the Broncos defense and Steeler's offense stepping up to give their team that surprise edge.

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to become the first 6th seed to reach the Super Bowl since the NFL went to its current playoff system in 1990. That's fifteen years of history against them - it isn't easy. Games and fatigue have a habit of piling up and snapping you at the wrong moment.

Pittsburgh are +3.5 on the point spread for this road game at the time of writing.

Plummer Plays

Jake Plummer will most likely play this week even though The Broncos have clinched the second seed in the AFC playoffs and can afford to rest some key starters. Mike Shanahan stated that the usual starters can expect to play today against the Chargers and while quite a few of the backups will see some time, the coach has mintimated that the key players should prepare for the whole game.

On the injury side, Shanahan said Al Wilson, Courtney Brown, Mike Anderson and Darrent Williams are out.

There is always a danger that players get ring rusty when they've been out - but Plummer didn't seem too concerned - even if he did not play at all this week - because practice is still as demanding as ever.

Matchup History: This is the 84th meeting. The Broncos lead the go Chargers 51-31-1. The Chargers have already lost 20-17 this season (at Denver). Last year Jake Plummer threw four interceptions and San Diego won, which was a crucial game in the San Diego's AFC West championship season.

On the sports betting front, the Denver Broncos are getting +11 on the pointspread for their trip to San Diego.

Great Dayne Ensures Win

Ron Dayne, Denver Broncos running back, cut loose for a 55-yard upfield charge to set up a 24-yard field goal 1:20 into overtime to lead his team to a 3 point margin of victory over the Dallas Cowboys - 24-21.

The win was the fourth straight for the Denver (9-2), who now have the second-best record in the NFL and a two-and-a-half game lead over San Diego and Kansas City in the AFC West.

The Cowboys dropped to 7-4 on this loss, losing their first-place tie in the NFC East with the New York Giants (7-3), who match up against the seahawks on Sunday. (Sport betting fans note that the Giants are currently getting +4.5 for this game on the points spread).

Dallas tied the game at 21-21 when Drew Bledsoe connected with Jason Witten with a four-yard touchdown pass at the start of the fourth quarter.

But they paid when Billy Cundiff shot wide with a 38-yard field goal attempt.

Broncos Prepare For Raiders

The Denver Broncos visit the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in what could be a war of AFC West rivals. Since being fired as Raiders coach by Al Davis 16 years ago, Shanahan (coach Denver Broncos) is 15-5 against his former team.

After Denver beat Philadelphia in their last game, Shanahan praised his team for being 6-2 in the first half of the season. "You guys did a terrific job," Shanahan said. "Now we have to get ready to start the second half and our first game will be against my favourite team - the Raiders."

Jake Plummer passed for three touchdowns and the Broncos rushed for 254 yards in the win last year. Denver were on the verge of sweeping the series when the Raiders came back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead. Then, in an amazing climax, Langston Walker blocked a 43 yard field goal attempt in the final seconds to allow the Raiders to hold on to a 25-24 victory.

Carswell Released After Crash

A little over a week after suffering serious injuries in a five-car accident, Denver Broncos tackle Dwayne Carswell has been released from the hospital. Carswell had surgery to remove his spleen and had internal organ damage repaired in a five-hour operation last Thursday.

He was driving to Denver Broncos' headquarters when two other cars collided and hit Carswell's 1994 Chevrolet sedan. Carswell suffered a contusion of his entire left internal chest cavity, multiple rib fractures, a ruptured diaphragm and a ruptured spleen.

The 33-year-old has spent his whole career with Denver and converted from tight end to tackle this season. Carswell was named for the Pro Bowl in 2001. He set career highs with 49 catches for 495 yards in 2000.

Broncos Kill Off Eagles Fightback

The real issue at Invesco Field on Sunday was whether or not the Denver Broncos would suffer another jittery second half.

The Broncos jumped to an impressive 28-0 lead, then had to fend off yet another fight back by an opposition team, as they repelled a determined Eagles rally. They finally stepped it up in the fourth quarter for large margin of victory.

"We still have to do a better job of finishing the game," receiver Rod Smith said, despite his offense's 564 yards and seven touchdowns against Philly.

This season Denver has allowed the New York Giants to rally from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to a losing 24-23 game. In a couple of outings before that, it was New England and Washington mounting fourth-quarter charges - Denver managed to cling onto victories.

The key to this game for the Broncos came early in the fourth quarter with the Eagles down 28-21. McNabb dodged left from a rush, stepped up to compete a 15-yard pass to Greg Lewis on 3rd-and-7, moving the ball inside the thirty. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-5, he lofted a pass to the end zone for Reggie Brown. But Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth darted in front of Brown for the interception.

The Eagles never made another score after that - losing 49 points to 21.
