Bears Rumble

Offensive linemen Olin Kreutz and Fred Miller of the Chicago Bears were fined $50,000 each on Friday for a fight that breached the NFL's player conduct policy.
The players fought last month at an FBI shooting range in the Chicago area, which prompted an internal investigation by the Bureau.

Paul Tagliabue of the League, fined Kreutz and Miller for violating its special conduct policy that deals with off-field matters. It prohibits conduct that endangers NFL employees and casts a negative light on the league and its players.

Kreutz broke Miller's jaw during the fight. Bears coach Lovie Smith was unaware of the fight until after it had occurred.

Kreutz said he would appeal against the fine thinking that it was inappropriate. Miller decided not to comment. Smith said it was a league punishment.

"We wanted the league to rule on it so we could move on and they have, so we'll just kind of go from there," Smith said.

Neither player was suspended due to the incident.

Magnificent Seven For Bears

Matt Bryant missed what would have been a game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Chicago Bears victory over the Tampa Bay.

It was the seventh straight win for the first-place Bears (8-3), who held on to their two-game lead over the Vikings in the NFC North. The Bears last won seven straight in 1986.

The Bears needed a little luck in victory and got it when Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Bryant missed a field goal with 2:47 remaining, after Simms threw an incomplete pass on a 3rd-and-2 play at the Chicago eleven yard line.

The Buccaneers were within three points when fullback Mike Alstott dove into the end zone from two yards out with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was the first touchdown allowed by the NFL's top-ranked defence in thirty-eight possessions.

It fact it was the defence that was responsible for the Bears' solitary touchdown of the day. On Tampa Bay's first possession of the game, defensive end Alex Brown stripped the ball away from Simms and defensive tackle Tommie Harris recovered the fumble - one yard out from the end-zone.

On the next play, Kyle Orton faked a hand-off and hit John Gilmore in the end zone.
Rookie Robbie Gould kicked field goals of 25 and 36 yards for Chicago. The loss dropped Tampa out of a first place tie in the NFC South with the Panthers, who won against the Bills.

Chicago Find Road Joy

The Chicago Bears proved their their running attack is alive and well and did their playoff chances now harm - against the The New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

"We get off the plane running the ball," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Cedric Benson, Thomas Jones, Adrian Peterson all did a good job...What can I say about the offensive line I haven't said?"

Robbie Gould kicked the winning field goal with six seconds to go from 28 yards. K. Orton set up the clincher with a 22-yard, third-down completion on a sideline route to Muhsin Muhammad. Chicago could then run down the clock before sealing things with the winning kick.

Tom Benson, ownwe, stayed away from Baton Rouge after complaining that security was not tight enough to protect him from angry fans. Fans stayed away too. The crowd was announced at close to 33,000 in a stadium that holds 93,000. It was the Saints' fifth straight loss.

Chicago, has now won four straight for the first time since 2001-02, which was the last time they made it to the playoffs.
