The
Breeders Cup Championship is an end of season international show case of horse racing's top stars that was first run in 1984 at
Hollywood Park. The Championship was an instant success and redefined the US racing calender.
It's the pinnacle of thoroughbred racing. The Breeders' Cup Championship is a multi-million dollar horse racing party that brings together the best animals in the world to tough it out in eight terrific races.
The
Breeders Cup events are for the quickest sprinters - the best short distance turf horses. The day's final race is the biggest (and richest): the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Every autumn a different North American racecourse hosts the Championship in its own special way - Belmont Park, Santa Anita, Churchill Downs, and other major courses compete aggressively to stage the championship program. Importantly, the flexible nature of the Breeders' Cup venue ensures that the meeting belongs to racing as a whole and not just one track.
Aside from the Classic, the other races are: the Juvenile and the Juvenile Fillies, the Distaff and the Filly and Mare Turf (for females ages three plus) the Sprint, the Mile, and the Turf.
One of the event's more exciting elements is the rivalry between American and European owners, horses, riders and trainers - a little like
Ryder Cup golf. National pride is on the line. Owners and trainers from England, Ireland, France, Germany and even Japan now circle the Breeders' Cup Championship on their calendars and plan schedules accordingly.
It is a truly international racing event.
The Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition. Churchill Downs in
Kentucky holds the record for attendance and total wagering. The renowned racecourse attracted over eighy thousand spectators in 1998 and when the championship came back to Louisville a few years later, over one hundred million dollars was wagered on the races!
