Players who focus on 'streaks' as a primary motivation for betting can do very well. They will of course consider other issues such as team news, injuries, weather and so on but streaks will be the dominant motivating factor in their betting.
The idea is to get on a team just as they come good or play on the opposition just as they turn bad - then 'ride' them until you estimate that that team's fortunes are about to turn again. It can be tough to call when a team is about to go on an extended run of good or bad performance - after all - how are you going to tell if a team is really coming together for a positive run or has just put together a couple of decent games only to go on to lose the next ?
It's not an exact science by any means but often the best strategy is to wait until a streak occurs in any number of teams and then wait until things begin to turn - perhaps in conjunction with a tough run of games coming up. So reacting to the existing streak rather than try to analyze when a streak might first start.
Include in your analysis, team spirit, competent coaching, must win scenarios and so on. You should know that if you are getting a return on investment on your betting of 60% to 70% following a team for a period of time - it's not going to last forever. Certainly it would not be a time to double up on stakes and it would probably be sensible to start looking for another streak team to follow.
The great thing about streaks is not just that you can ride the victories or losses (by favoring the opposition) in your betting but that you can often pick up value prices too.
For instance, if a team has been on an extended run of victories but the signs are that they are 'due' a loss, then by taking the opposition team in the next game you may be getting an inflated price. Likewise if a team has been on an extended run of losses but the signs are that they are due a win - then again the price on that team after a long losing streak could be too big, due to the betting public still betting against that team.
Remember not just to look at the overall streak but look at the teams' home and away records. Sometimes a team does not look like it is 'streaking' as results may read:
W(h) L(a) L(h) W(a) L(h) W(a) L(h) W(a) L(h) W(a)
[Key: W=Won, L=Lost, (h)=home, (a)=away.]
The Win / Loss record here does not look like a streaking team. Yet when you analyze it you can see that the team is losing at home consistently and winning on the road (away).
In this example a team is more obviously streaking:
W(h) W(h) W(a) W(h) W(a) W(h) L(h) L(a) L(h) L(a).
The above are simplistic examples but should give you a few ideas about how to go about formulating a strategy.
