Priest Holmes Injured

Kansas City Chiefs' Priest Holmes has been placed on the injured reserve due to head and neck problems.

Carl Peterson made the announcement but did not include details of the injury. Holmes missed Sunday's game against Oakland because of concussion and a report has stated that doctors found lumps on Holmes' spine.

"This decision was made based on the advice of our medical staff and two expert outside medical consultants," said Peterson. "The consensus was that Priest should cease to have physical contact for a minimum of 30 days and will then be re-evaluated."

The unconfirmed report also said that Holmes may have to retire because of the spinal condition, which could cause future paralysis. Peterson did not confirm this stating: "At this time, we consider this not to be a career-ending injury. The doctors have indicated that Priest's condition will improve by refraining from contact. As always, the health and well-being of our players is our utmost concern. Priest is a marvelously-talented performer and has been an extremely productive player as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs."

This season, Holmes has 451 yards rushing and six touchdowns on the ground. He has also caught 21 passes for 197 yards.

Crucial Decision Gives Chiefs Win

The Kansas City Chiefs were camped just a few feet away from the Oakland Raiders' end zone - down by three points with five seconds remaining. An almost certain field goal from that distance would have taken them into overtime - but not necessarily led them to victory against stubborn Raiders resistance. Most 'by the book' coaches would have gone for the field goal and by his own admission Vermeil usually does too. On this occasion Vermeil went for the win.

The Chiefs put the ball in the hands of Larry Johnson and the third-year running back did the rest by launching his himself into the air and landing in Oakland's end-zone. The Chiefs gained a 27-23 victory and are now at 5-3.

"It was not an impulsive thing. It was the right thing for us to do. And they made me look smart," Vermeil said. "We told Larry, - make sure you get over the top.
"That's the first time I've done that - I normally kick the field goal."

Kansas City Defiant On Collins' Throw.

If Kerry Collins and the Oakland Raiders don't come to Arrowhead this week looking to throw the ball against the brittle Chiefs secondary - it wouldn't come as any great surprise. Throwing might suggest that the Raiders were losing the game and battling to catch up. Collins threw big in the loss to New England, bigger in a loss to Philadelphia and forty-eight times in the loss against San Diego.

Throwing, however, might be the way to go against Kansas City - with the NFL's worst pass defense a year ago, the Chiefs' are off to an even worse start this season. Also the Chiefs' secondary are in the same poor shape as the Raiders'.

Surtain and Warfield missed workout with injuries. Former starter Dexter McCleon did limited work Wednesday while trying to recover from a sprained knee.

This alone should make Collins and Jerry Porter happy.

But the Chiefs aren't backing down:

"They've got some great receivers and they like to go deep, so that's probably what they'll try to do," said Chiefs' Jared Allen. "But that also means the quarterback is going to be holding the ball, which means we've got chances to get to him."

In the series to date these teams have had ninety-one regular-season meeting. Chiefs lead 46-42-2 after winning the last five games.
