Colts v '72 Dolphins

It's time again for comparisons to be made regarding the latest hot streak team and the '72 Dolphins. The famous 14 to 0 streak (17-0 after they won the Super Bowl) still lives on as one of the best unbeaten runs in US sports history.

Although it's quite likely that the Colts (8-0) hosting the 1-7 Texans this weekend, will continue to 9-0 - at some point the Colts will falter, surely. Thirty years of history is against them - but then again, most streaks are beaten or matched at some point.

Who are the teams to have come close? The 1998 Broncos came the close with thirteen straight wins - then the 1985 Chicago Bears with twelve.

Eight for the Dallas Cowboys, nine for the Kansas City Chiefs, a ten streak for the 49ers, the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings.

The 1991 Washington Redskins and the 1984 Dolphins come in third with eleven.

No team has really got close to the 17-0 Super Bowl winning run.

The Best NFL Coaches

What should be the character of a good head coach?

Should he be animated or controlled and contemplative. Should he display his emotions with explosive tantrums. In the event, personality and a coach's character doesn't make make a big difference - he should just be himself. But there are three things that are important:

1. A coach must be able to teach and convince players of the value of what it is that the coach wants them to do.

2. A coach needs to be a people person and form good relationships with everyone in the organisation.

3. A coach needs to be honorable. Keep promises. Tell it like it is - face to face.

There, you have it. In the simplest of terms, the three qualities needed to be a successful NFL head coach...implementing it isn't as simple!

(Synopsis of article by Marv Levy).
